Intent - what do we want children to learn?

At Bucklesham Primary School, the aim of Religious Education is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge, understanding and respect of Christianity and the other principal religions represented across the world. We aim to understand the way that religious beliefs shape our lives and our behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance our spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE in discussion with the Headteacher.

Implementation - how will we achieve our intent?

As a school we use Kapow teaching units to ensure progression of learning about religions and wrold views, and appropriate coverage of the teaching of different religions across the school. The core concepts are based on enquiry centred lessons and our discreet weekly teaching of RE ensures we spend time looking into each the following areas:

  • Engaging with the key concept in their own lives/world.
  • Enquiring into an aspect which relates to the key concept
  • Exploring an understanding of the key concept through 3 areas (i) Text or Narrative (ii) Community Practice (iii) Living
  • Evaluating the key concept and what it means to us
  • Expressing our knowledge and learning to share with others

We use knowledge organisers provided in the teaching units to ensure the core concepts are covered and teach children the correct religious terminology to be used relating to the core concepts of the faith studied. Children are encouraged to ask and answer the ‘big questions’ by enquiring into an aspect of religion which relates to the concept. Pupils are encouraged to explain their ideas, ask questions and listen to others, as in all aspects of learning. Respect towards others beliefs is taught from the outset and modelled by teachers and staff. As in all subjects, high quality questioning supports pupils’ understanding of language.

Pupils learning is recorded in class floor books in Reception, however further up the school, resources are used in addition to those displayed in the floor books and these are kept in individual folders which demonstrate the children’s progress in more detail. We use a range of ways to record learning including written pieces (mainly KS2), art, notelets, drama, models etc.

Woven through our RE teaching and learning are the British Values and the understanding of the impact of beliefs on societies, communities and individuals. Children are taught to have an appreciation of what happens in the religious community, particularly focused around places of worship, the response of the individual and respect for diverse beliefs.

Impact - what will it look like when we have achieved our intent?

Our RE curriculum ensures our pupils are committed to being aware of the different beliefs and values people hold in their local environment and the wider world and have a deeper understanding of the Christian faith in a variety of expressions. They will be able to consistently demonstrate a respect for diversity in their thoughts and actions, and can participate confidently in philosophical discussions with interest, respect, awe and wonder.
